I feel the need to dissect this comment point by ig’nant point, not exclusively as a response to “whiteforlife” but to reflect on the rampant displays of racism expressed online tonight.
- I don’t know what you were reading, but I did not defend what he did. I may have thought it was funny (because it was), I may have called it unexpected since he’s definitely done stuff like that before, I may have reblogged the fact that what he did doesn’t change the fact that I like his music, but I definitely called it disrespectful. I think you’re confusing my unexpressed support of Taylor with a defense of Kanye.
- To the best of my knowledge, Kanye doesn’t make it a regular thing to “openly talk shit [about] white people.” I can only recall him talking shit about former President Bush, which, while unrefined, contained some valid points about the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina and the way black people were portrayed in the media, e.g. black folks who took bread from store shelves were “looters,” referred to as refugees, as if they had fled from a third world country.
- Nigger is not a synonym for someone who is ignorant and/or disrespectful; it is a racial slur and not to be used lightly. Its use in conjunction with conjectures about Kanye’s sexual availability, virility or lack thereof (notice that he’s giving head instead of receiving it) trace back to the dehumanizing and emasculating racist language of the 1700s. I could write paragraphs about how this episode relates to protecting the innocence and sanctity of white womanhood (that is, would people be this pissed off if he interrupted a white man or a woman of color?), but that’s another post for another day.
